The southbound Interstate 5 reopened this afternoon as firefighters battled a fire near Castaic, authorities said.  The highway, a major route for trucks and commuters, was shut near California 138, California Highway Patrol Officer Vince Ramirez said by telephone. Traffic had been rerouted from the 5 to the 138, he said.

Earlier, the 5 was closed in both directions, said L.A. County Fire Department Inspector Ron Haralson. The northbound lanes were reopened earlier in the afternoon, Ramirez said. The fire reportedly began near Big Oak Lane about 1:20 p.m. and grew to about 30 acres. More than 200 firefighters were working to extinguish the blaze. The area has about 20 homes and an elementary school. All were safe, Haralson said.
