Gold In Them Hills!
March 19, 2006 |
From days gone by: March 9, 2006 reported in The Los Angeles Times, a snippet of a golden tale about gold in them thar hills of Santa Clarita. The earliest recorded discovery of gold in California, on March 9, 1842 in what is now Newhall, when a local cattleman Fransico Lopez pulled up some wild onions and there was a gleem in his eye! The stike in Placerita Canyon caused quite a stir and many of the local framhands went out to stake their claim, leaving area ranches scrambling to replace the ranch hands who had left to pursue the golden dream. During its heyday the site yielded 260 some odd pounds of gold annually and by 1847 the site was mined out. {Another strike which was called “Sutters Mill” was also recorded during this time period, I’ll see what I can dig up on that one}
