Hart School District Has Plans for Castaic Students
The Castaic School system and the parents of students here have been in an uproar since Hart District has been pondering the decisions on where Castaic students should attend class.
Since Valencia High school opened Castaic students have attended class there, with the opening of the West Ranch High School, kids had an option.
Now as both schools face over crowding the Hart district is recommending a new plan that has many Castaic parents angry.
The following is an excerpt from The Signal, Saturday February 10, 2007
In response to the strong Castaic opposition, Hart district officials unveiled a new proposal Wednesday that would split incoming freshman from Castaic between West Ranch and Valencia high schools over the next four years - a move that many in the area remained strongly opposed to.
“I’m not at all in favor of the new plan,” said CUSD board President John Kunak. “It is the desire of the community, and more importantly the middle school students, to have them attend one high school. So they can go to school with their siblings and friends and attend one school throughout their high school career.”
Other possible solutions included continuing to house incoming students at West Ranch - a move that would require the purchase of 22 portable classrooms at a cost of roughly $3 million - and the suggestion that West Ranch boundaries be redrawn to move some students back to Hart High School.
“Until the high school (in Castaic) is built, the community would very much like them to provide portables and have they attended West Ranch,” Kunak said.
It appears to be a plan that is still facing much scrutiny from local students and parents alike.
