Magic Mountain Sale Possible
June 23, 2006 |
Big news hit the Valley today. Six Flags Magic Mountain has stated it may have plans in the works to sell the property.
The park which been in operation for thirty years is a Santa Clarita icon.
It saddens me top hear this type of news as the park is a huge employer to hundreds of people.
A company spokesperson was quoted as saying the efforts to attract families to the park instead of teens, the company has announced it will consider selling. The family strategy expected to bring a customer base that would spend more money in the park has been harder to achieve than anticipated.
The company, Six Flags has been struggling with a debt of over $2 Billion. The parks that are slated to close are, Six Flags Magic Mountain, Six Flags Darian Lake outside of Buffalo, N.Y. ; Six Flags Waterworld in Concord CA., Six Flags Elitch Gardens in Denver, Wild Waves and Enchanted Village outside Seattle and Six Flags Splashdown in Houston.
What does this mean to our community? Fearful about the aera tourisim will suffer, the Santa Clarita Chamber of Commerce CEO, Larry Mankin worries a sale not focused on tourism would be bad for the local businesses and economy.
What is speculated is that a buyer that would continue to operate the park, or the land would be sold to developers for housing and businesses after dismatling the park.
