The City Council is rallying the troops again in efforts expected to support a resolution Tuesday officially opposing Cemex Inc.’s proposed mega-mining project and its impacts to the Santa Clarita Valley in an effort to encourage California cities to do the same.

Quoting the Signal “The purpose of the resolution is to provide an official city document for the council to send to cities throughout California, said city spokeswoman Gail Ortiz”

“We will use this resolution to send to other cities and ask them (to) establish their own proclamations or resolutions to oppose mega-mining in Santa Clarita,” she said.

Cemex’s plans to operate a 69 million ton sand and gravel mine in Soledad Canyon, the federal government is taking away local control, leaving city officials greatly concerned that federal and state governmental agencies suppose evading local control is acceptable, according to the resolution.

This proposed action by the council is part of the city’s ongoing attempt to oppose Mexico-based Cemex’s mega-mine.

On Oct. 3, the U.S. Supreme Court elected not to evaluate the city’s petition for writ of certiorari for review of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeal’s February decision to uphold a federal consent decree granted to Mexico-based Cemex in May 2004.

Santa Clarita officials will continue to fight the proposed mega-mine through additional litigation, a public outreach campaign, proposed legislation and the resolution presented at Tuesday’s meeting.
