Unused portable modulars for Santa Clarita Valley’s homeless.
October 31, 2007 |
Unused portable modulars will become bedrooms for the Santa Clarita Valley’s homeless. Plans were unanimously approved by the County Board of Supervisors to purchase up to four moduals for the winter shelter.
“It’s a great step in the right direction,” said Tim Davis, executive director of the nonprofit Santa Clarita Community Development Corp., which has tried for more than a decade to open a permanent shelter.
The SCCDC, with help from the city, county and a large group of volunteers, runs the homeless shelter from Dec. 1 to March 15 each year.
Last year, a record 199 sought shelter, yet the community has resisted building a permanent homeless facility.
The shelter will open this year behind temporary Fire Station 104 in the city’s Golden Valley area.
After three years it will shift to the Saugus industrial area, and then after three more years move to the outlying grounds of the county’s Pitchess Detention Center.
